How to Choose Jewelry That Actually Feels Like You

I’ve always believed that how we show up matters.

Whether you’re walking into a board meeting, heading to the grocery store on a Saturday morning, or meeting someone for coffee, your appearance is often your first introduction. Before you’ve said a word, you’ve already communicated something about yourself.

And jewelry? Well, I believe it is part of that story.

But here’s something I’ve learned over the years. Looking good and looking like everyone else are not the same thing.

Growing up, we didn’t have much money. For years, most of my clothes came from Goodwill. Eventually, we started shopping at places like Kmart. But there were certainly no designer boutiques or expensive shopping trips.

But even as a young girl, I loved fashion.

I remember playing with Fashion Plates and watching shows like Dallas and Knots Landing, fascinated by how the women dressed and carried themselves. I wanted to look polished, confident, and put together, regardless of what the price tag said.

As I got older and started earning money babysitting, mowing lawns, and doing odd jobs, I began buying my own clothes, shoes, and jewelry.

And initially? I bought what was popular.

I still remember my first pair of Guess jeans in the 1980s. I absolutely loved those jeans! But looking back, I sometimes wonder whether I loved them because they were perfect for me or because every other girl wanted them, too.

By high school, something began to shift.

I started asking myself what I liked. Not what everyone else was wearing. Not what was trending. What actually felt like me.

Some people loved my style. Others criticized it.

And you know what? That’s okay.

That experience taught me something I’ve carried into adulthood, through my years as a school principal, and now as the founder of UNCOMMON Jewelry.

Personal style isn’t about following everyone else. It’s about knowing yourself well enough to make your own choices.

And I believe there are three things worth remembering when choosing jewelry that actually feels like you.

1. Know What Works for You

Start with what you love, what feels comfortable, and what fits your lifestyle.

I love beaded bracelets, but I’m not typically drawn to oversized beads. Not because they aren’t beautiful, but because they don’t always work for me.

I type, write, move around, and stay busy throughout my day. I want jewelry that moves with me.

Could I wear something bigger for a special occasion? Absolutely!

But everyday jewelry needs to complement my life, not complicate it.

Choose pieces that reflect your personality, feel comfortable, and make you feel good.

And if you don’t like something? Don’t wear it.

Life is too short to spend it trying to love something simply because everyone else does.

2. Give Yourself Permission to Be Courageous

One of my favorite UNCOMMON Jewelry pieces is The Signature.

Its three defining words are Confident. Courageous. Clear.

I believe when you’re clear about what you want and courageous enough to pursue it, confidence grows along the way.

But courage can be difficult.

Trying a different style, wearing something unexpected, or stepping outside what you’ve always known can feel uncomfortable.

What will people think? Will I like it? Can I pull it off?

Those same questions show up when we’re making bigger decisions in life.

But sometimes the very thing we’re afraid to try becomes the thing we wonder how we ever lived without.

Give yourself permission to experiment. You might discover something wonderful about yourself.

3. Remember, You’re Allowed to Evolve

Life has seasons. So does personal style.

What you loved five years ago may not be what you love today. And what feels perfect today might change tomorrow.

That’s not a problem. That’s growth.

Try the bracelet. Wear the statement piece. Experiment with a different metal, color, or design.

If it doesn’t work, change it.

One decision doesn’t have to define you forever.

The same is true for the bigger things in life. We learn, adjust, and keep moving forward.

Wear Your Story

At UNCOMMON Jewelry, I believe jewelry should be beautiful, meaningful, and personal.

Not because someone else says it’s fashionable, but because it feels right for the woman wearing it.

So the next time you’re choosing a piece of jewelry, ask yourself something simple:

Does this feel like me?

And maybe, just maybe, ask yourself one more question.

Could this reflect the woman I’m becoming?

Because choosing jewelry isn’t just about what you wear.

It’s about how you choose to show up.

And that decision belongs to you.

Wear Your Story.
